‘Delhi to have world-class roads by 2010’

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday said Delhi was getting ready to showcase a world-class road infrastructure during the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Addressing a gathering after formally inaugurating two new flyovers in South Delhi, the Chief Minister said she was confident that visitors during the Games would get a good impression about the city and that their stay would be memorable.

With the Commonwealth Games providing an opportunity to Delhi to undertake a large number of development works with speed, quality and excellence, Ms. Dikshit called upon all the agencies to ensure effective coordination for making the sporting event a grand success.

The Delhi Government, Ms. Dikshit said, had also undertaken a comprehensive exercise for modernising streetlights and greening and landscaping roads.

A beautification drive had been launched to give an attractive look to the area under the flyovers.

As for the two flyovers she inaugurated on Wednesday at the Africa Avenue and Rao Tula Ram intersections, Ms. Dikshit said they were part of the corridor improvement scheme from IIT Gate to National Highway-8. The road from Nehru Place to Indira Gandhi International Airport would become signal-free by next month as a third flyover on Outer Ring Road at Munirka would also be commissioned then.

The 884-metre-long flyover at the Africa Avenue-Aruna Asaf Ali intersection near JNU has been constructed at a cost of Rs.82.6 crore. It has a dual carriageway of nine metres width and three lanes in each direction. The flyover at the Rao Tula Ram Marg-Benito Juarez Marg intersection has been constructed at a cost of Rs.59.6 crore. This 920-metre-long flyover has a single nine-metre-wide carriageway and three lanes for traffic moving from NH-8 to IIT.
