Meenu
Sharma
Possessing
a natural flair for designing apparels, styles come
to her in the most innovative way as piece 'd' art.
Meenu Sharma of Meenu’s Wearhouse established
her work in 1989, ever since there has been no looking
behind. Dealing with a personal clientele of over 300
people from India and abroad, it's been a great experience
for her. Holding exhibitions in London, Dubai, Singapore,
Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Kanpur and Ludhiana have been
successful landmarks in her career. Being a qualified
designer and hailing from the business house of
Palam Potteries (leading manufacturers of Ceramic
table wares), Meenu always had a desire to make it for
herself. With encouragement at home, she triggered off
the instinct in her.
According to Meenu, "I am a
professional textile designer and in our times they
weren’t any design institutes. I believe if you have
the aesthetic sense, you can apply it anytime, anywhere
to anything. I am into ethnic wear for the local market
and for the overseas market. I make scarves, which are
hand embroidered. My forte is embroidery that is where
I play the most. For exports and overseas I do blouses
and scarves. I send my stuff to Hong Kong and Europe.
The domestic market price range starts from Rs 1500
going up to Rs 6000-7000. I believe in turnover rather
then going in for a very select high priced item."
Meenu has a list of celebrity clients
which includes singers, wives of industrialists,
socialites etc. She has been exhibiting her collection
for the last 8-10 years and she makes 2 collections
in a year. The unit has master cutters, embroiders
and craftsman, who bring finesse to every garment
with class intact. Meenu and her staff together put
in their very best to achieve excellence in quality
and production. In fact one of her master designer Mohammed
Tauheed Alam has been working with her for the last
11 years. She believes that there is no substitute for
hard work.
Meenu
believes that firstly she is a mother and then a businesswoman.
She says, "I have three children who need proper
care, and my work takes a backseat when the children
want me around. I always had that urge to do something
and god willing it has worked well, as of now I have
a regular clientele of 500 people. My family is supportive
and they have always encouraged me. My husband and children
have been my greatest inspiration. The children were
small when I started, it was very tough in our set up,
but later I got all the support I needed. I have been
in this line for 15 years, which includes 12 years of
effective work. I have been exhibiting my collections
and at the same time getting stuff ready for my clients.
When I go overseas, I advertise under my own brand name.
Hong Kong fashion week was an eye opener as it
was really good. My dreams are big, and future venture
includes starting my own outlet, something like a studio
line. I am planning to sell not high priced items as
I want to reach out to as many people as I can."
Every garment goes through deft hands
and keen supervision to attain ultimate perfection.
Master craftsmen, embroiders and designers together
work to transform fabric into garments par excellence
to make a range which is always better.
