Jawaharlal
Nehru University
In all of over 900 acres, where serious birdwatchers and
elite scholars dwell together in harmony, is the Jawaharlal
Nehru University situated in the south of Delhi.
Sitting
pretty on the relics of the Aravallis , JNU campus is
one with the most impressive history. And also impressive
is the elite presence felt by JNU scholars in the corridors
of the bureaucracy, political areana, corporate world
, and many other areas nationally as well as internationally.
Set up in the 1970s , JNU was established on the basic
ideals of the first PM Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru like national
integration, international understanding, an academically
arranged scientific approach to the society at large and
specific researches into topics of national, international
or academic importance.
A melting pot of diverse Indian culture with students
from every nook and corner of the country and also from
abroad, JNU has made a mark in the International academic
arena. Anil Jacob, an ex-student of International Relations
at JNU informs of his memorable stay at the Ganga hostel
and recollects, "Having studied abroad at the
best of the schools and colleges, JNU is different in
its own way. I or for that matter any student at the Campus
has a memorable time here. So enchanting is the place
that most of the people at JNU linger on with their further
studies and research work , just to stay on in the campus.
There are reasons which are even non-scholastic! "
He sounds convincing in the backdrop of the city's one
of the most beautiful and ecologically well-preserved
areas. In the hush settings of the campus, you are sure
to spot a peacock or the rarest of the birds in the shady
green banyans or the Gulmohars of JNU.
Another
peculiarity of JNUiites, according to its students , is
the number of its students aspiring for civil services
examination. Something what Ravi, an aspirant of the CS
, calls as the ‘adda’ of IAS aspirants of Northern India.
Evident from the hostels and the flourishing IAS curriculum
book stores in the vicinity of the campus, a sizeable
number of Civil Service aspirants are bred in the campus.
Eligible through an All-India entrance test, there are
a host of Masters and Research level courses available
at the campus. The most popular courses in JNU are those
in Historical Studies, International Studies, Study
of Social Systems, Political Studies, Economic Studies
and Planing, Study of Regional Development, all in the
School of Social Sciences.
On the non-academic front of the JNU , the Debating club,
Drama Club ,Film Club, Fine Arts Club, Literary Club,
Music Club , Mountaineering Club , Photography Club ,UNESCO
Club, the Students For Harmony group are active. The SFH
here is committed to the promotion of world peace and
universal tranquility through cultural interaction amongst
the students. The National Service Scheme (NSS) sponsored
by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, has been
actively involved in JNU with an aim to arouse and enrich
the social consciousness of students through constructive
social action and to develop co-operative team spirit.
Gastronomically the JNU offers the best of food - regional
and cosmopolitan, at nominal rates at its various canteens
in the campus. Also available in the café, is the
glimpse active student activities and the political activities
in the campus.During the students' council elections,
when probably the whole city comes to know about it ,
fierce poster and cartoon wars, verbal duels and competitive
yet peaceful group meetings are a viewers' delight. Violence
in all respects is only alien on the campus of JNU. In
the campus and with the JNU students, there is bonhomie
& respect, academics & fun together hand in hand.
With so much that JNU has offered to its students and
to the country at large, it remains a place where anyone
would like to loose his sense of belongingness but that
of JNU alone.
