Jawaharlal Nehru University
" A University stands for Humanism, for tolerance,
for reason, for the adventure of ideas and for the search
of truth. It stands for the onward march of the human
race towards ever-higher objectives. If the Universities
discharge their duties adequately, then it is well with
the Nation and the People".
- Jawaharlal Nehru
Established in 1969, the Jawaharlal Nehru University
has in the quarter century of its existence carved out
a distinctive niche for itself in the academic and intellectual
life of India. Originally conceived as an institution
that would embody Jawaharlal Nehru's visions and ideals,
the First Schedule of the University Act emphasized
the principles for which he had worked during his lifetime:"
National integration, social justice, secularism, the
democratic way of life, international understanding and
a scientific approach to the problems of society."
Without deviating from these initial objectives, JNU has
nevertheless, over the years, come to attempt a great
deal more, participating in new adventures of ideas, experimenting
with innovative methods of research, taking intellectual
initiatives and expanding the frontiers of knowledge.
JNU attracts students from all over the country and abroad
and from diverse strata of society, creating a vibrant
composite community in the campus, reflecting in a
microcosm Jawaharlal Nehru's dream of an integrated nation.
To maintain the national and the democratic character
of the university every year, all-India admission test
is conducted at thirty-five centres, spread across the
country.
Residential facility is provided in the 10 hostels
on campus, which can accommodate some 2500 students.
Inclusion of students from the under-privileged castes
and ethnic groups is ensured through the 22.5% reservation
policy. Overseas students, who form some 10% of the
annual intake, enrich the cultural and intellectual life
of JNU. There is a long tradition of holding serious after-dinner
meetings in the hostels to which the students often invite
well-known public figures, writers and intellectuals.
The faculty also represents a national cross-section,
and many of the academic staff lives on the campus. Instead
of being segregated in one part of the campus, the faculty
houses are interspersed with the hostels, an arrangement
which contributes to an atmosphere of easy and informal
student-teacher interaction.
The basic multi disciplinary academic units of
the University are:
1. School of international Studies
2. School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies
3. School of Life Sciences
4. School of Social Sciences
5. School of Environmental Science
6. School of Computer & Systems Sciences
7. School of Physical Sciences
8. Centre for Biotechnology
9. Communication & Information Services
10. Bioinformatics Centre
11. Central Library
