 Roses are used to make essential oil
Modern life is stressful, but imagine sniffing away the tension, the worry. Well, aromatherapy promises just that. Aroma Therapy is the use of aroma for its healing properties. It is a herbal therapy which balances body, mind and health, reduces pain, relieves depression and anxiety, alleviates stress and enhances beauty. It uses essential natural oils for its health and beauty properties
.

It is believed that the therapy began in Egypt 6000 years ago. Indian Ayurveda incorporates aromatic massage as a key aspect of herbal treatment.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are strong, aromatic oils derived from flowers, fruits, seeds, barks and roots of plants. These oils have antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal qualities and are free from toxins.

Some of the commonly used essential oils include: lavender, tea tree, sandalwood, basil, rosemary, peppermint, eucalyptus, black pepper. These oils can be used in various ways, for a massage, inhalation and so on.

Essential oils enter the body via two main routes - the nose and the skin. It is diversely used for common ailments like coughs, viral infection, headaches, muscular aches and pains, arthritis, sprains, skin infections, insomnia, cuts, burns, wounds.

For personal and beauty care, they are used to balance and rectify skin and hair/scalp imbalances. Essential oils are also used as deodorizers and mouth fresheners. Many essential oils are insect and pest repellent.

Care in storage and administration

Essential oils are highly concentrated so take care when using them. Here are a few guidelines:

  • Do not take essential oils internally.
  • Avoid certain essential oils in early pregnancy.
  • People with high blood pressure, epilepsy, neural disorders or kidney disease should avoid certain oils.
  • Essential oils should always be used diluted unless otherwise recommended.
  • Do not use essential oils near the eyes or other sensitive areas.
  • Do not store these oils in plastic, varnished or painted containers.
  • When blending essential oils use a stainless steel, glass or ceramic container.

Essential oils are priced between Rs 50 to Rs 300 per 10 ml.
