 Music Bands

Nirvana

Nirvana teamBand members: Daniel George (keyboards), Brennon Denfer (bass), Desmond Powell (Guitar & Leader), Raja Bhattacharya (Singer & Manager) and Christopher Powell (drums, percussion).

It started in 1985 when Desmond and Christopher Powell, two brothers and talented musicians, left their small town life in Bihar behind them and moved into the big city of New Delhi to try out their fortune. It was while they were playing in hotel bands in Delhi that they came across their neighbour in the sleepy-dopey Chittaranjan Park, a wannabe singer by the name of Raja Bhattacharya. Raja was into Indian music, and knew little about Rock and Roll. So when they jammed first, Raja discovered that there was a lot to be learned from the Powell brothers. That's how Nirvana was born.

In December 1986, the boys get their first gig alongside none else but India's ever-popular rock band Friends of Shiva. For two years the band moves along as a four-piece act. In 1988, young Stephenian Tarani Chandola joins them on the keys changing Nirvana's sound altogether. The only good bands around in Delhi at that time were Nightshift (now Euphoria), Seby and Wings and Dudley's Five.

Today, Nirvana is still a band to reckon with. Their tally of more than 600 shows is still unbeaten in Delhi and is growing.

Nirvana boys
Daniel "Cha Man!" George, keyboardist, was born in 1968 in Hyderabad. Danny has arranged music for many popular artistes like Shubha Mudgal (Ab Ke Sawan) and Mika (Sawan Me Lag Gai Ag), as well as several up-and-coming artistes. He is the brain behind many of your favourite jingles. He also follows his passion for jazz rock by playing for his own band Whimsy Logic. His favourites are Eagles, Steely Dan and Chick Correa. Phone: 641 4810.

Brennon Denfer, bass guitar player, was born in 1969 in Delhi. The only son of renowned jazz musicians Kenny and Joy Denfer, Brennon is considered to be one of India's "finest and most-educated" bass guitarist. Apart from playing with Nirvana and RDD, Brennon jams regularly with serious jazz musicians and also does a lot of recording and sessions work. His favourites - Glenn Miller, John Coletrain, Cole Porter, Chick Corea and Rush. Phone: 301 0169.

Desmond "Boss" Powell, guitarist and bandleader, was born in 1965 in the sleepy Anglo-Indian railway town of Chakradharpur in Bihar. Desmond is married to his guitars. The most friendly and affectionate bandleader, he is so warm that even other bands in town like him. His favs -- Van Halen, Blackmore, Dire Straits, Satriani, Steve Vai, Alex Lifeson.

Raja Bhattacharya, vocalist, was born in Calcutta in 1965. In the band, he is the administrative guy, handling deals and the paperwork. He is a media specialist with a diplomatic mission. Raja also occasionally dabbles in theatre, a recent participation being in Barry John's musical production "Blood Brothers". Raja's favs -- Steely Dan, Level 42, Chicago, Billy Joel, Wet Wet Wet, Men At Work, Bee Gees, Boston, all songs of Kishore Kumar, music of R.D. Burman. Phone: 621 3045.

Christopher "Kitty" Powell, drummer, was born in the same family as Desmond in 1968. When his parents named him Kitty, little did they know that the boy's future was on the kit -- the drum-kit. Kitty is a man of fewer words and more action. Off-stage, he has his own business. He also plays for the Delhi-based rock band Euphoria. His favs -- REO Speedwagon, Mr Big, Dire Straits, Queen, Rush. Phone: 623 4428.
