The
society in the last century has witnessed overwhelming
changes beginning with the industrial revolution.
Technological and scientific innovations have changed
people's lives many fold. H G Arunkumar's works
are a representation of these changes and what impact
it has on the mankind. And the impact need not be
positive.
The artist weaves imagination and creativity into
the mundane technological materials to create something
new and unexpected. The finished creation acquires
a new meaning. The idea is based on the concept of
recycling or regeneration of the waste into something
productive. There has been a spurt of revolutions
in the invention of a whole range of new materials
to satisfy our senses. But the technological and industrial
revolution has made the society more hollow. Mankind
now faces new threats like pollution, terrorism and
alienation.
Materials
like plastic, vinyl and silicon have been invented
and used by human beings. The artist has exploited
the physical and psychological qualities of these
mundane materials. The material for the work has been
chosen with great care requiring immense technical
expertise and sensitivity. The material chosen reflect
something of the past, rather it tells a history of
a particular invention.
One
quality of his art is that it is more interactive.
A spectator can understand the message which the art
piece wants to tell. These creations in a way reflect
mankind and how man is himself scared of it. For instance
his Magic Bed piece is symbolic of various
innovations in the lifestyle of man who cannot take
even a moment of blissful sleep. One of his creation
- without head and tail - tells the tale of a man
who's caught up in the technological revolution and
cannot make a head or tail of his own existence.
The exhibition was held at the Lokayata Art Gallery.
