Market is the place to shop if you are looking for
sophisticated and classy products. This market has grown
and seen a lot of changes in the last 50 years of its
existence. It is still a favourite haunt to shop for
many book, handicrafts and music lovers. It has numerous
bookshops, eateries, music shops and furnishing stores.
From exotic fruits, vegetables, flowers and books to
hi-tech gadgets and CDs, Khan market has it all. The
market is a favoured destination among the embassy crowd
and tourists. Many foreigners are seen shopping here
for clothes and handicrafts.
Some of the most famous shops in Delhi are found
at Khan Market. Shops like Bahri sons, National
cloth house and Music Shop are as long
as fifty years old and now the second and the third
generations are carrying the tradition.
The market came into existence after the partition.
The refugees who lost all their valuables and businesses
were displaced from their land and allotted shops
here. The shops were auctioned to the allotees on
a 'no profit no loss' basis. Initially they weren't
many shops and business was not booming. As time passed
the shops changed their looks and the market grew.
The number of shops also increased, so did the number
of customers and Khan market became a market to reckon
with. The market had 65 shops previously, but now
the complex houses around 125 shops. The best part
about the market is that it has maintained that classy
feel and ambience. No hawkers are allowed on the pavement
and there is ample parking space for the visitors.
The
central location of this market attracts one and all.
Shops like The Music Shop - a famous music
store, Bahri Sons
and National Cloth house are institutions in themselves.
Many hep and happening stores give the place a very
up-market feel. Stores like the famous Full Circle-
a bookstore cum café, Snowhite office superstore,
The Home Store- a furnishing outlet, Bizarre-
Contemporary western wear, Anokhi- a boutique,
Archies Gallery, The Pet Shop- especially for
pet lovers, and the famous Shenaz Hussain café
cum beauty parlour, cum store are a must
visit.
The specialty of the market is the variety of exotic
fruits, vegetables, grocery and flowers that are not
to be found in any other part of Delhi. The handicraft
showrooms truly depict the traditional and ethnic
face of the market. This place is a shoppers delight
and a food lovers delight too. With places like Chona's
for fast food, Sugar and Spice for mouthwatering
variety of cakes and confectionery, Café
Turtle the café inside Full circle and
The Rampur Kitchen- Mughlai, offer a large
variety for the taste buds.
The market is a favourite haunt of the embassy wives
and the elite as it is very central, near to embassies,
diplomatic colonies and five star hotels. It therefore
attracts very exclusive, and cream of the crop regulars.
Khan market is a must visit for quality shopping.
