The Golden TempleThe sacred shrine of the Golden Temple shimmers in the sun amidst the waters of Amrit Sarovar, the rectangular 'pool of nectar'. A trace of sublime tranquillity envelops the place. It is also called Harminder Sahib or Darbar Sahib, the holiest of Sikh shrines and the spiritual centre of Sikh faith. The Golden temple is located in the holy city of the Sikhs, Amritsar, once the dense forest home of Guru Nanak the founder of Sikhism.

A priest reads from a hand-written copy of the Guru Granth SahibThe Golden temple complex is not the effort of a single designer or a master builder. The fifth Guru, Sri Guru Arjan Devji first conceived the idea of a central place of worship for all the Sikhs in the world and he himself designed the architecture of the shrine. A Muslim Divine, Mian Mir, laid the foundation stone of the temple.

Intricate gold work on the outside wallsThe work on the temple began in 1559. The temple's architecture is a fine blend of Muslim and Hindu artistic styles. The shrine is also considered as one of the best architectural forms in the world. The shrine was richly ornamented during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, with intricate marble sculptures and precious stones. He built the upper half of the building with 400 kg of gold leaf.

The design and construction of this holy shrine is unique. Its location in water symbolises the synthesis of 'nirgun' and 'The sarovar that surrounds the templesargun', the spiritual and material realms of existence. This holy shrine was built at a level lower than the surrounding land instead of theusual higher base; which signifies the humility of the Sikh Faith towards God and Humanity as a whole. The Golden temple's four entrances - north, south, east and west - welcome people from all four communities, Brahmanas, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Sudras, with faith in the one creator and also symbolises the universal brotherhood.

The elaborate workmanship on the walls and ceilingThe Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs, a collection of devotional poems, prayers, and hymns composed by the ten Sikh gurus and various Muslim and Hindu saints was installed in the Harmandir Sahib in 1604. The location of the Granth Sahib here, adds to the sanctity & reverence of the Harmandir Sahib.

Here lies the heart of Sikhism. Visit this sacred shrine at least once in a lifetime, the place of architectural marvel and serene spirituality
