Sheila Dikshit ranks # 3 - A survey by India Today-ORG-MARG
 The
bi-annual 'Mood of the Nation' poll conducted
by India Today-ORG-MARG in January 2002, tracked the
performance of Chief Ministers of 16 states by
using a sample of 17,522 voters, representing
a cross-section of all social age groups in urban
and rural areas. The poll also gives us an insight
into the popular perceptions of the people. The following
are the results.
#3 - Sheila Dikshit, New Delhi
Soft-spoken but surefooted, Sheila Dikshit has lent
a quiet solidity to the chair she has occupied since
1998. An able administrator, Dikshit charted out her
agenda carefully, paying special attention to infrastructure.
Her government can take credit for the dozens of flyovers
that now dot Delhi's once-choked roads. Although switching
to CNG was not properly planned, bringing down air
pollution certainly was her responsibility. She is
also trying to cut down on red tape by directly interacting
with citizens under the Bhagidari scheme. It is this
that has made her powerful.
With women power to the fore in the Delhi administration
- there are some strong women in top positions - Dikshit
is sending out clear signals that will ensure that
women get the best.
Pluses: Her ratings have improved sharply
in six months. Her urbane, polished image and modern
outlook have complemented her reputation as a diligent
administrator.
Minuses: Lacks the mass appeal of an M L Khurana.
Absence of political aggression and rhetoric make
her a soft politician.
